Do You Need Snow Tires or Studded Tires?
posted on

There are several questions that always comes up this time of year. Do we need
snow tires or studded tires
? What is best for me and the area I live in? What are the pros and cons to both? Driving in the winter can be dangerous, but with the right tires and careful driving, it can be a little less stressful and a lot safer. Now all you must decide is are you getting winter tires or studded tires.
Winter Tires or Studded Tires
We will start with winter tires. Winter tires are designed to be driven in snow and extremely cold temperatures. The protection against extreme temperatures is the feature you can’t see but is very important. Summer tires will get hard in the freezing temperatures where a winter tire will keep the best traction and not get stiff.
Studded tires are next. These tires can be noisy and are very harsh on roads, but if ice is a concern for you, these are the tires you need. A studded tire will stop quicker on the ice and give you better traction. Keep in mind — you can only stud brand new tires.
Whichever tires you choose, you should not use either of these year-round. The easiest way to remember when to change your tires is to install them at Thanksgiving and change them at tax time. Of course, it will all depend on the weather, but it is a nice rule of thumb to keep in mind.
