We have all heard a few crazy things when it comes to cars and the myths that surround them. Maybe you have told the legend of James Dean’s cursed car, cleaned your wheels with Coke, or had the misfortune of using kerosene instead of car wax for a better shine. There are tons of car tips and tricks floating around out there, but how many are true?
Believe it or not, most of what you think you know about cars is wrong. Here is a quick list of the most common things said about cars and what we think of them.
You get better fuel economy with a manual transmission.
False- With today's advanced technology manual and automatics run about the same when it comes to fuel economy. The type and style of your vehicle will have a lot more effect on the gas pump prices than your transmission type.
Using your phone while pumping gas will cause an explosion.
False- There have been no documented cases of cell phone signals igniting fuel vapors.
You need to change your oil every 3,000 miles.
False- With the advancement of synthetic oils and car engines themselves you can often go several thousands of mile before needing an oil change. Always refer to your owner’s manual or ask your mechanic.
A big engine means a safer car.
False- This myth is a little outdated but for a long time bigger vehicles with bigger engines were believed to be safer. Unfortunately each model of vehicle differs in safety performance and of course, the person behind the wheel plays a big role as well.
