Stay Charged This Winter!

Winter weather can be an inconvenience in multiple ways. It gets darker earlier, it’s cold and wet outside, and sometimes it’s hard to drive in the snow and ice. Cold weather can also cause trouble under the hood of your car, especially with your battery.
The battery in your car is the heart of your electrical system. It provides the power needed to start your vehicle. When the electricity flows, electrons flow to other components of your electrical system, including the starter. But what happens when our batteries get cold?
Cold temperatures cause these electrons to slow down, which can prevent you from starting your car. Capacity is also decreased, while demand is increased due to accessories. Increased electrical demand can come from your heater, heated seats, or that fancy cup warmer you got for Christmas last year.
Here are a few tips to keep your battery warm and charged this winter.
Make sure you have the right battery. An old battery is far more likely to die this winter, even new batteries can have issues. So up your chances of not having issues this winter and replace your battery if it is old. Also, make sure that you have the proper battery for your car.
Leave the cup warmer at home. You should minimize the use of accessories as much as you can, especially when you are starting your vehicle. Try to avoid strain on the battery, so you can start your car and let your vehicle run for a few minutes before turning your heater and radio on.
Do whatever you can to keep your battery warm! If you have a garage fantastic! Keep your vehicle indoors. This will help with frosted and icy windshields and keep your battery at a good operational temperature. If you don’t have a garage you could invest in a battery blanket or even remove your battery when the temperatures drop dangerously low.
Be prepared for battery issues by having a proper charging system in your car. Jumper cables are always great, but having a battery-powered charging system means you don’t need to depend on someone else to jump off your car. Also get your battery checked before winter hits. Alignment Center and Alaska Car & Truck in Anchorage, AK would be glad to help you with all your battery needs. It’s better to find out on your own schedule that you need a battery than to get stuck on the side of the road.
