What's the Difference Between a Two-Wheel Alignment & Four-Wheel Alignment

At Alignment Center and Alaska Car & Truck, we've been addressing the misalignment woes of our customers for over four decades. All you need to do is give us a call or drop by and ask for a wheel alignment. Our professionals know just what to do for your make and model, and we're happy to share our knowledge.

We can answer questions like today's topic: the difference between a two-wheel alignment and a four-wheel alignment.

Let's start with the basics. A wheel alignment is a service that involves adjusting the angles of the wheels so they are within the  specifications set by the manufacturer (with exceptions for modified vehicles that require different considerations). The service is performed because wheels can become misaligned over time from normal wear and tear on suspension components as well as from collisions with pot holes and other obstacles.

This adjustment helps to optimize tire performance, extend tire lifespan, and contribute to safer and more accurate steering.

Two-Wheel & Four-Wheel Alignments Defined

But the wheel alignment process is different depending on what you drive. Here's how and why:

Two-Wheel Alignment: As the name suggests, a two-wheel alignment involves adjusting the angles of only the front wheels of your vehicle. This type of alignment is typically performed on vehicles with a solid rear axle, such as trucks, older cars, or vehicles with a front-wheel drivetrain. In a two-wheel alignment, the technician focuses on aligning the front wheels so they are parallel and pointing straight ahead.

Four-Wheel Alignment: Unlike a two-wheel alignment, a four-wheel alignment involves adjusting the angles of all four wheels. This type of alignment is commonly performed on vehicles with independent suspension systems, including most modern cars. It takes into account the angles of both the front and rear wheels, aligning them to specific measurements provided by the vehicle manufacturer. A four-wheel alignment ensures that all four wheels are parallel and pointing straight ahead.

So, which type of alignment does your vehicle need? The answer depends on your make, model, and drivetrain. Most vehicles with independent suspension systems will require a four-wheel alignment. However, older vehicles or those with a solid rear axle may only need a two-wheel alignment.

If you have questions about the best type of alignment for your car or truck, consult the alignment specialists at Alignment Center and Alaska Car & Truck. We'll assess your vehicle's needs and ensure you receive the correct alignment.
